Song of the Day: “Back and Forth” – Aaliyah
Can you believe it’s been 10 years since Aaliyah passed?
Rest in Peace Baby Girl.

artist spotlite: kendrick lamar
World Premiere: “ADHD” – Kendrick Lamar
As the third single to Kendrick Lamar’s debut, Section.80, “ADHD” is the newbie’s magnum opus thus far. It’s a morose, foggy generational commentary. What’s disguised as a drug anthem turns out to be more of an introspective thought-provoker. Listen closely – the Compton-bred rapper likes to play with hip-hop lingo and turn it on its head. It’s about damn time visionary hip-hop sounded so good.

fashioneer: jason.ierace

Jason Ierace is a fashion and beauty photographer hailing from Australia. He caught my eye with this specific shoot that blends masculine with feminine, boxing motifs with Cavalli‘s gypsy looks. Too good.

artist spotlite: slaine
World Premiere: “Don’t Talk Greazy” – Slaine & Statik Selektah
Beware: Statik Selektah‘s latest protege’s name is Slaine. Their joint mixtape, released recently, boasts some wildly entertaining rhymes and, of course, the same slaughter-worthy street production we’ve come to expect from Selektah. Listen below to my current fave on the set, which sounds like a cut-up version of Beyonce’s “Work It Out” (yes, the Neptunes track from Austin Powers) mixed with a semi-annoying Jadakiss vocal sample. The moral of the story? Remember who you’re speaking to or end up with your car keyed.

Song of the Day: “Hustle Baby” – Freeway (Feat. Mary J. Blige)
This (below) is probably the most adept statement on the current “double dip recession” I’ve heard thus far. And it came from Philly Freeza a.k.a. Mr. 1900 — who name-drops everyone from Sarah Palin to Stanley Steamer all in under 4 minutes. Listen closely and look out for Free‘s new mixtape coming soon.

Throwback to ’96… MTV’s Sex In The 90′s
The chick in this vid is incredible. Look at her all Kimmy’d up in the back of that sedan. She brings me back with,”Alright, you can’t even lie.
That couch is phat.” Remember PHAT?

Song of the Day: “How It’s Gonna Be” – LovHer
Even though he’s thuggin’,
I love him…
And that’s how it’s gonna be.
If there even is a Def Soul division anymore,
y’all really need to re-up these girls deal stat.

There was a time when R.U.L.E. was the face of fashion.
Why would I lie?

Fashion editors must have a lens to the future. One of the reasons I started Smoke & Mirrors was to have a space that I could publicly highlight the talent I witnessed attending undergrad at Parsons. Whether this talent be found in the streets, in my classes, or on my own, I felt the need to share and spotlight such up-and-coming, about-to-break designers, artists, musicians and thinkers, all before the big wigs caught wind. Because if there’s work out there and it’s either struggling to be seen or just hasn’t gotten it’s break just yet, I wanted to assist in its shot at relevance, reverence, revolution.

I hope I’ve been successful in doing so thus far, even if I have lightened up on the writing end (due to other big kid responsibilities). One facet of the blog that’s proven especially popular is the “artist spotlite” section, which has opened many a discerning ear up to pre-fame musical acts they’d otherwise never hear from. In that time, readers have experienced the likes of Jessie J, Wiz Khalifa, Curren$y, and Big Sean, all pre-come-up. (Not to mention, cramming the blog’s mixtape series with unheard-of’s aplenty.) Don’t get me wrong – I’ve never been one interested in the underground over the mainstream – culturally, I’ve always found them equally as fascinating — as displayed through the blog’s play on high and low, old and new, pre and post. I’ve shined the spotlight on several under-the-radar designers, stylists, and artists since the blog’s beginning, but haven’t until now had a section to group them into. They’re sprinkled about the 1,000+ posts on Smoke & Mirrors. In other words, this post may not be the blog’s first up-and-coming designer/stylist/artist feature, but it is the first to officially stand under the umbrella of “fashioneer.” A new category of posts focusing on fashion’s forefront.
Get familiar with recent Parsons grad, Paul Negron. Find here some sketches and photos from his thesis collection which has hints of his internship at Proenza Schouler and evokes a young Ghesquiere‘s foray into the future. Below, find his F/W ’11 croquis. For more from Paul, head here.

Song of the Day: “T.G.I.F. (Remix)” – Katy Perry
(Feat. Missy Elliott)
The only time I can stomach Katy Perry is when she gets urban.
Which is not often.

fashion focus : heat.saver
AOL StyleList helped me out on this one. [Shouts btw] Follow my lead for some RACKS-ON-RACKS-ON-RACKS-style, heat-alleviating essentials.
‘Cause the 90′s is back, son – and in more ways than one.
When I don’t want to schlep too much, I stuff everything in this Mexican carpet bag, pull the drawstring, and go.
Git’ur’own at WillLeatherGoods.com.
I love a tackier-than-thou ode to 90′s hip-hop, especially in 90 degree heat.
Get your Versace on at Net-A-Porter here.
As round as the sun is hot, I turn to these circular framed shades to hide from UV’s all the while channeling my idol, Iris Apfel.
Peep these alternatives over at Topshop.
In a heatwave, bet you’ll catch me in a kurta.
What’s a kurta? Educate oneself.
Besides the red cup (which is an obvious summertime must),
these vintage Levi’s bell-bottoms are my go-to warm weather pant.
