Below find my convo with Mr. Weir for
Paper …

We’ve seen our boy, Johnny Weir, at pretty much every fashion week event this week and wondered how he went from outfit to outfit in what seemed like mere seconds. “I came from Chris Benz to Betsey [Johnson] and, of course, had to change. It’s fashion week!” the Olympic figure skater explained. “I quick-change in my town car. It’s not a lot of space, but, I’m like a housewife… I can make anything work.” Speaking of work, Weir, who counts Lady Gaga and Karl Lagerfeld as his fashion inspiration go-to’s, has been busy with a collaborative holiday collection for MAC Cosmetics entitled “Glitter and Ice” along with shooting his highly-acclaimed reality show for Logo. “We wrapped the second season just last week. Now, all I do is wait and see. While the MAC collection will hold my fans until then.”

rads.next.steps

Is that blue I see? I couldn’t believe my eyes when androgynous designer,
Rad Hourani, put a boost of color into his notoriously monochromatic Rad by Rad Hourani collection. The unisex line boasted some new shapes, too: with leggings underneath most looks, the silhouette he’s been developing for seasons looked fresher this time around. Jackets came reversible, which is a plus in this economic climate. Everything looked to be like three outfits in one.

Below read about my (very brief) encounter with Ms. Minaj via Paper

We’ll be honest — there’s not many people we’d get trampled to talk to, but last night Nicki Minaj was the exception. Only five minutes to showtime at the Betsey Johnson show (for which Minaj was much of the collection’s basis — both musically and aesthetically), the eccentric female emcee caused pure pandemonium when she took her seat beside Lynn Yaegar and Olympic skater/fashion plate Johnny Weir. “Back up,” security screamed at the crush of journalists who descended on Minaj, but that didn’t stop us from shoving our tape recorder higher into the sky.

First, on our list of questions, who the hell does her wigs and where does that person get their inspiration? “My great friend Terrence Davidson does all my wigs. Lately I’ve been feeling very Harajuku! Especially the colors, the light blue –  I love [the style]. I hope to keep it this way for a bit.” Another journalist shoving into my thigh got the next question, asking Ms. Minaj what style tips she’d recommend. “Do whatever the fuck you want,” she replied gracefully. We got the next dig, wondering when the last time she visited her hometown of Baisley, Queens happened to be. “You know, I was actually in Queens just yesterday. But not Baisley, we just passed by there.”

The short-but-satisfying responses didn’t come quick enough for the inching crowd gathered affront her bodyguards because what came next resulted in everyone with interview and photo access to evacuate the front row. “She’s done, she’s had enough publicity, people! Go to your seats.” And that was that. Short, bittersweet, but totally worth a broken ego and bruised thigh.

carines.world

Paying tribute to former French Vogue editor-in-chief and style icon Carine RoitfeldBarney’s New York threw her a karaoke party at Westway to celebrate her collaboration with the department store, called “Carine’s World.” “Is there anyone more fabulous?” Simon Doonan gushed over the former Tom Ford muse with champagne in hand. Guests including Alexander WangStephen GanCecilia DeanBruce WeberLara StoneAnna Dello Russo, and Julia and Vladimir Restoin-Roitfeld, toasted the lady of the evening before moving into the other room for karaoke. Who stole the show? Valentino. As in legendary fashion designer Valentino Grivani who performed a rendition of “My Way” to a cheering crowd.

We caught up with New York designer, Adam Lippes, who holds on to Roitfeld-edited issues of French Vogue like they’re heirlooms: “To this day, her French Vogue‘s are the only magazines I have kept,” he told us. Supermodel Karolina Kurkova dished on her experiences with the editor, “She was one of the first people I ever worked with. When I was 16, we did a shoot together with [Mario] Testino. I was in a bathtub with a veil over my face in some hotel room! And we’ve worked together ever since. Always one to mix things up a bit, Carine herself mentioned how “her” it was to have the party at a former strip club. “It is Carine’s world, after all.” And, yes, she did, in fact, take tequila shots with her daughter.

International Herald Tribune fashion critic Suzy Menkes‘ take on the resurgence of Tommy Hilfiger‘s (pictured above) cool is clear: ” I never thought the day would come when I’d say I was missing ‘preppy’ in New York, but now since everyone’s doing prints and wilder things, I’m rather looking forward to it.” Tommy himself clued us in prior to showing yesterday evening to a packed tent in Lincoln Center that this collection was based upon his “obsession with pop art.” “I own many pieces by Warhol, Basquiat, and Haring… and I wanted this collection to reflect their kaleidoscope of colors,” the design legend explained. Fashion stars including both Anna’s, Emmanuelle, Carine and Andre, as well as Russell Simmons and a heavily guarded Carmelo Anthony, were buzzing about how Tommy has changed over recent seasons and has re-emerged toward something looser and younger  –  just ask Grammy winner Corinne Bailey Rae, who is currently recording her next LP due out next year and who counts herself as a recent fan. “I really love the way the brand’s been changing for the last few years and I especially love ‘The Hilfigers’ ad campaign he has going on now with all different ethnicities of people who appear as a family,” the singer explained. “It’s a lot like my own family,” she explained. “We may not be rich and preppy, but we have black, white, and brown people that make us up. All different types.”

Overheard at the
Thierry Mugler Parfum party for Nicola Formichetti’s new pop-up shop (with BOFFO co-founder Spilios Gianakopoulos, pictured above)
last night: “Shows? What shows?” Most of the crowd, unfazed by a current terror threat and packed fashion week schedules, shmoozed the night away at MI-5 with the Mugler creative director and
Lady Gaga outfitter. Some folks even crossed the pond just for the occasion, skipping shows altogether. Now, that’s what we call power! Also at the fete, was Nicola’s latest obsession, Jessica 6 (pictured below), who performed a special six-song set in honor of “NicoPanda.”

Find below my Alexander Wang After-Party report for Paper Magazine

We’re still trying to piece together last night’s debauchery at Alexander Wang‘s after-party — and there’s some definite gaps. Did we really see Cathy Horyn at the notoriously rowdy fete yukking it up with Bryan Boy? (Yes.) Or male models doing jello shots? (Uh-huh.) We’re still a bit piece-y on whether or not we actually saw some journalists doing keg stands, but, we know this much is true: after braving a massive queue and having our cab searched due to the terror threat, we had the best time (as expected) at the downtown designer’s latest party on the Pier. In attendance was Wang muse, actress, and style star, Zoe Kravitz, who with boyfriend Penn Badgley, agreed that “New Yorkers don’t get to experience house parties like most do, so, it’s really cool that he did this.”

Indeed, the vibe was total frat party bar mitzvah (if there were such a thing) with giveaways and trashy Playboy pinups scattered throughout. The large space was filled with fridges full of 40 oz.s, bathtubs stuffed with ice and Budweiser tall-boys, and couches with blow-up dolls and Playstation consoles. Even legendary hip-hop mogul, Russell Simmons, who’s been to his share of fashion parties, admitted that: “No one throws a fashion party like this!”

The dance floor, lit in blacklights, provided enough space for the 1,000-some guests to get down to the sounds of
DJ Jesse Marco. We caught Jourdan Dunn raving with glow sticks to Big Sean‘s “Dance (Ass)” while onlookers munched on hamburgers and hot dogs. Other guests included models Karlie Kloss, Jamie Burke, Miles Garber, and Miles McMillan, who looked fresher than most considering their week’s crammed schedule. At the Kanon Vodka (curated by Apotheke) bar, Kate Lanphear and newly-appointed Chanel milliner, Gigi Burris, buzzed about a potential Justin Bieber appearance. “I heard it was Justin Bieber [who was performing tonight], but, I don’t know,” Lanphear explained.

But, in the end, it was Tyler the Creator and the Odd Future gang, who were the night’s special guests, performing a set that got somewhat of a mixed reaction. There were people that rushed to the front of the stage and then those that called it a night. We overheard several guests asking, “Who is screaming?” and, “Aren’t these the guys that GLAAD hates?” Perhaps not the best choice for a party that’s attendance leaned heavily gay, but, hey… to think that we were under the same roof as Ms. Horyn, blow-up dolls and Mr. Creator, possible the strangest mix we can think of, made it all surreally OK.

Had the chance to speak with Drake at Versace‘s invite-only FNO event. See below for our interview for Paper …

Last night, we braved the “DRIZZY!”-screaming throngs of Drake fans outside the 5th avenue Versace boutique, where the 24-year-old Torontonian TV star-turned-emcee was guest DJing at Fashion’s Night Out. Our eardrums are still paying for it. Of course, the evening was completely worth it, insanity and all, and the former PAPER cover star was kind enough to chat with us about his eagerly anticipated sophomore effort, Take Care, to be released on his birthday, October 24th.

It’s been one year since Drake and his major label debut LP, Thank Me Later, changed the hip-hop soundscape entirely. Just listen to the melodically submerged, moody sounds currently flooding R&B (Frank Ocean) and hip-hop (Kid CudiBig Sean) and it’s relatively simple to identify its root. “It’s Toronto. One hundred percent,” says Drake modestly when we ask if he’s played a hand in R&B’s resurgence. “I wouldn’t say I created it, it’s just the sound of my city. Same for [Abel Tesfaye of] The Weeknd. He’s just out there writing music, making music that comes from the most beautiful city in the world. Why wouldn’t it sound beautiful, you know?”

Mixtape track, “Marvin’s Room,” has been creating internet buzz for Take Care thanks to the slew other artists revamping and covering it. Early-aughts tween pop-star JoJo had one of the most popular, in which she, for the first time, delved into adult territory. And Drake took note. “In JoJo’s case, she actually took the time to write really potent new lyrics,” he says. “It was really shocking, I think, for her audience since throughout her career she’s been kind of stereotyped as this teen pop star and then she comes out with this different kind of substance. It’s very rare that people take your song and do it over like that.”

His connection to Versace, you ask? “I’m a huge Versace fan,” he declares. “I love the history: the class, the regal sort of feel; there’s just something about it that possesses this characteristic that I think I stand for, too, something that my mother and her friends instilled in me growing up in Forest Hill. I grew up seeing women in Versace, the women of class around me. So, I was just floored when they asked me to do this. For me personally, it’s one of the most exciting calls I’ve gotten in a while.”

Fans of the emcee’s Degrassi days will be excited to learn that he’s interested in returning to his previous trade. “As soon as I submit this album, I’m in the process of signing with an agency and starting my acting up again.”

fashion.focus: nicola.formichetti

You may know my boy, Nicola Formichetti,
as some girl named Lady Gaga’s dresser…  or not.
Either way, you should probably peep my interview (below) with
the fashion maestro for Paper now!
[As my gramps would say, "He's gonna be big someday." Ha.]

“Nicola’s”, named for shop curator and Thierry Mugler creative director/Lady Gaga fashion director, Nicola Formichetti, however, is not your typical pop-up shop. Other than the far-out clothes and digi-baroque installation within, what makes Formichetti’s pop-up space unique is that it’s not just about pushing product, but his collaboration with non-profit BOFFO, and Gage/Clemencea Architects, is about fostering the development of up-and-coming designers. (In coming months, the space will house temporary shops with designers Irene Neuwirth and Patrik Ervell).

We spoke to Formichetti on press day about what’s in store for his two week run and beyond…

Marcus Holmlund: You’ve been quoted as saying that you don’t style, that you instead, create “moods.” What’s going on in here?

Nicola Formichetti: I mean, I’ve done the whole digital thing now for a while and I was getting sort of bored of it. Not bored, but, unhappy because everything was becoming so similar, so homogenized…flat. For me, I love technology and information, so, I’m always about pushing that stuff, but, it was becoming less emotional… I went back to buying books and taking pictures and making mood boards — things like that — and I found this marriage of the physical world and the digital world. That’s really what this [shop] is — a reflection of my love for fashion, architecture, technology all in one place. Things that I think are interesting. Where you don’t just come to shop, but look, touch. I purposely included the Gaga pieces on the mannequins, so, it’s no longer just things you come to buy, but stare at, see that they’re real, physical, actual.

MH:  I was eye-ing that Archive Versace get-up over there on that mannequin. You mean, that’s Gaga’s? I can’t just come and buy it?

NF: No, I wouldn’t want people to. They’re too special. But, I want people to see they exist in their form… in front of them.

MH: Explain this ‘Panda’ motif you have going on here merchandise-wise…

NF: I designed the pandas, you know, like Japanese “Hello Kitty”… I created three characters: “NicoPanda.” that’s me, “ZombiePanda” that’s an homage to Rico, and “DaddyPanda” which is kind of the idea of this sexy little guy. They’re all over the place: on t-shirts, iPhone covers, iPads. And they’re affordable.

MH: I see there are quite a few racks of Mugler pieces. Can you give me a hint at what this upcoming Mugler collection has in store?

NF: You can expect things to be more contained. It’s all about the clothes this time. It’s more digital, it’s more colorful. But, a bit more subdued. We’re honestly still working on it. When I get out of here, I’ll go and continue work on it.

MH: How would you say the Mugler line is doing?

NF: The clothes have been selling like crazy. But, I don’t think people know that. And that’s why this time, we’re going to let it be known in the clothing. Last time, people just saw it as a show… they couldn’t really get a grasp of the actual clothing. So this time, they will really get an understanding of the clothing. I want to really put the emphasis on the clothes because we do have the capacity.

MH: Are you at all nervous about Cathy Horyn’s review? Since Gaga slammed her in Vmagazine recently?

NF:  No, actually, to be honest, I really love Cathy Horyn.

MH: You’re an editor, stylist, creative director, now shop owner. How do you manage to do it all and stay sane?

NF: That’s always been me. I may do a lot but I still find time to party. [Laughs] It’s important.

Daniella Kallmeyer / Fall 2011 / New York Fashion Week

You may recognize her name from Bravo’s Fashion Show, but, this designer’s much more than just another reality show contestant. Her clothes speak for themselves… and they’re utter poetry. This season, she took it all the way to the dark side and back. Poe would be proud. (Kallmeyer also makes the sickest jewelry imaginable… see below for her bronze knuckle-crusher.)

littledoe. & Aurora Lopez Meija / Fall 2011 / New York Fashion Week

It’s not often handmade jewelry or headdresses (better yet – bespoke lingerie) draws such an eclectic crowd. But, late Sunday night, in a dimly lit SoHo apartment, littledoe. designer Chase Cohl and custom jeweler Aurora Lopez Meija showcased their latest baubles to some unsuspecting guests and close friends – Adrien Grenier and Theodora Richards watched a special acoustic performance in the living room (by Spider-Man’s Carney) while magician David Blaine pleased partygoers, packed into the dining room, with card and coin tricks.
“Anyone got a quarter?” the illusionist was caught asking throughout
the night. Read my full post on littledoe. for V here.

Yes, it’s underwear.

Carlos Campos / Fall 2011 / New York Fashion Week

I’m proud to announce my involvement in New York [by way of Honduras] designer, Carlos Campos’ latest menswear collection. Above find the invite I designed for the presentation and below read my description of the new collection… and stai toon’d for a separate behind-the-scenes post.

Fall is a season for change, for reflection, for realization. A season that enabled Carlos Campos’ introspective return to his Latin roots. Traveling back in time and across continents, Campos found inspiration in South America’s most beloved poet; the romantic, Mr. Pablo Neruda. From the tip of his newsboy cap and tap of his cigar, Neruda’s stylistic mark is revitalized through Campos’ signature synthesis of old-world craftsmanship and modern male sensibilities. Using the highest quality Italian wool and pima cotton, Campos’ details come alive in relaxed fits cued by Neruda’s cinematically laid back aesthetic. The palette is treated as though its been burnt or left to age, with deep, rich colors such as rust, cognac, midnight blue and hunter green. Many of the wools come speckled, adding a variety of texture and richness to the garments. Shirting comes in solid varieties, ginghams, stripes, and other patterned combinations that when paired together create subtle yet interesting looks. Full length and cropped trench coats  exude a sense of modernity whilst remaining true to Neruda’s romantic nostalgia. This is Campos’ ode to common things – bicycles, handwritten letters, and afternoons without plans.
